The number of nucleons (protons or neutrons)
in the nucleus of a atom. The nucleon number
(also called the mass number) is the sum of
the proton number and the neutron number. In
symbols, such as ^14 6^C that represent
nuclear isotopes, the lower, or subscript,
number is the proton number. The upper, or
superscript, number is the nucleon number.
